2011 became dangerous for Latin American journalists

Latin America has confirmed its status of a gloomy one of the most dangerous regions in the world for journalists after the release of figures for the past year.

A total of 24 journalists were killed during the year throughout the region, seven in Mexico, five in Honduras, four in Brazil, three in Peru and one in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala and Paraguay. These were prepared by the Inter-American Press Agency (IAPA).

Almost all the killings were adjusted major drug traffickers and criminal gangs in collusion with corrupt officials.

2011 was one of the most ...

In his speech, IAPA said: ' At the impunity of crimes committed in previous years, and the lack of action by the authorities to deter those who resort to violence created a vicious circle, leading to high levels of censorship '.

It was also mentioned about the failures of the media in other countries such as Argentina, where the government has undertaken to control the supply of paper used in newspapers.

In addition, the statement noted the limited success achieved in regard to press freedom in Cuba, a country where until recently exhibited violence against independent journalists and bloggers.
